I received this ARC (advanced reading copy) to review and I really enjoyed how this novel helped me to understand the struggles of a single mom and her daughter in the city of New Orleans. The struggle with poverty and safety seemed authentic and helped me to understand the that poor families need support all around them to be successful.
I think many students in the junior grades would enjoy the real issues that arise in this novel as Tia learns the truth about her Dad and the courage that her Mom has throughout the novel. I think that this would make a great read aloud for Grade 5 or 6.  I feel it would help a class to delve into several issues that families must deal with when they have limited financial means. The novel deals with the issues that poor families face in a respectful and thoughtful way.
