The Geomancer's Compass
Melissa Hardy
Tundra Books

This novel had many seemingly unrelated elements that worked very well together.  It was a ghost story which will entice many readers but it also taught me about the tunnels below Moose Jaw and helped me to learn more about the hardships that the Chinese immigrants faced when they first came to Canada to work on the building of the railroad.  I think a grade 8 class would enjoy this for the humour and ghost story and the Grade 8 teacher would enjoy the way aspects of Canadian history are woven into the story.  Racial tensions, and prejudices are addressed in this novel as well.
